Monika Kinsman’s HeartBeet Organic Superfoods Cafe is keeping it raw and healthy after opening in Queen Anne at the beginning of the month.

HeartBeet operated in Roosevelt for a decade, and Kinsman had been eyeing Queen Anne for a second location. With the loss of parking and other access challenges created by construction of the Roosevelt light rail station, she decided to close shop there, she said.

Luckily, she knew the operations manager of Zaw Pizza, who tipped her off that their Queen Anne space, 1635 Queen Anne Ave. N., would soon be available.

“This is a great neighborhood,” Kinsman said. “It seems like the people coming in here are talking about how there are not a lot of health-food options.”

HeartBeet has changed its menu in the last 10 years to include some non-raw items to go with its superfood smoothies, fresh juices and elixir shots, such as warm grains bowls — the Buddha Bowl is very popular — soups and hot drinks that are sure to be in demand this winter.

HeartBeet also sells vegan pies from Kinsman’s Pure Pies company, which supplies sweet treats to other local businesses. She also owns the Seattle Commissary Kitchen in the Industrial District.

Kinsman’s family has lived in Seattle since 1912, and she attended John Hay Elementary and McClure Middle School growing up. She lives in West Seattle with her wife and three kids, and is considering leasing an apartment above the cafe in Queen Anne.

People have been popping in to learn more about HeartBeet, and Kinsman expects business to pick up in January, when people start their resolutions to become healthier.

She said she was a “junk-food vegetarian” before her mom’s 2004 lung cancer diagnosis. Kinsman said she and her mother saw how chemotherapy and radiation affected her grandmother, who also had lung cancer.

“She ended up getting so sick that she died,” Kinsman said.

The two went down to the Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida, which encourages a raw-foods diet as part of natural healing. They both switched to raw-foods diets, but Kinsman said she no longer adheres to a diet of strictly raw foods.

“I feel best when I eat mostly raw foods, for sure,” she said.

That’s because raw foods are full of live enzymes that help break down food, and have also been shown to help boost the immune system.

“It’s like that phrase, ‘You are what you eat,’” Kinsman said. “Do you want to eat live food or dead food?”

Kinsman said she started HeartBeet when she switched her diet and found it difficult to eat out with her friends.

“I basically said, “Someone should open a raw-food restaurant,’ and ended up doing it myself,” she said.

HeartBeet Organic Superfoods Cafe is currently open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and will expand hours to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a New Year’s Day grand opening. Most of Kinsman’s employees transferred over from her Roosevelt cafe, but she said she will need to double staff when HeartBeet expands its hours of operation.
