Donna Louise (Flynn) Thompson passed away in her home on April 26, 2017 at the age of 72 after a long struggle with cancer. Donna was born in Spokane, WA on October 9, 1944 to Myra (Cornett) and Bernard Flynn who owned and managed a small grocery store and butcher shop.  She grew up on Wall Street with her twin brother Denny and two older sisters, Judy and Patty. She earned her BA in Education at Washington State University, followed by her Masters of Education (MEd) in Reading/Language Arts at Seattle Pacific University.

Donna believed deeply in fairness which lead her to work in Seattle’s public schools her entire career (and later to her children’s participation in the Bussing/Integration program). Throughout her career she taught every grade from kindergarten to 6th grade, served as a Curriculum Advisor for the Follow Through program in the early ‘70s, and retired after having spent years teaching 3rd and 4th at BF Day Elementary in Fremont. Over her career she won many awards, including several Apple Teacher of the Year for Excellence.  She impacted many students through the years with her love of learning and of books which she often taught them to make by hand. In Donna’s bookshelf sits a thick binder full of things her students have sent her including, cards, poems, drawings, photos, heartfelt thank you’s, and graduation announcements.

Although she had known Craig Thompson in high school, it wasn’t until they were both living in Seattle after college that they met again and started dating. They both loved university football games, politics and laughing. They were married in 1970 and their first child, Holly, was born 2 years later, followed by Kyle in 1978. During this time they moved from North Seattle to the Queen Anne Hill neighborhood, where they lived for over 40 years. It was here that Donna became an active community member: years as Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, political committee chair, steadfast Nob Hill yard sale team and de facto mom to neighborhood children on both sides of The Hill.

Donna had lifelong friends, and a close, loving family. She enjoyed gardening, photography, sewing and giving of all kinds. Donna is remembered lovingly by husband Craig Thompson; daughter Holly and her husband Mike; son Kyle and his wife Fernanda; and two grandchildren, Lucas and Mateo.

A celebration in her honor will take place on Saturday, September 22nd from 1 – 3pm at Sorosis Park (300 E Scenic Dr.) in The Dalles, Oregon. Further information and memories can be left on the Donna (Flynn) Thompson Memorial Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate instead to Gorge Literacy at https://www.cgcc.edu/literacy or Seattle Reading Partners at https://readingpartners.org/location/seattle/ to share Donna’s love of reading with those most in need.
